This movie helps to clearly expose the ego’s defense against connecting with the Spirit. The main character Kamala is acting out an extreme form of people-pleasing. She comes from a planet where she was raised from childhood with one purpose: to telepathically pick up on all the desires of men and to meet them one hundred percent.
It is commonly believed that pleasing a partner, or one’s children or parents, is Christlike. But people-pleasing blocks intuition and our natural connection with the Spirit. It is a clever disguise over authenticity. It has to be exposed in some way because it holds us back from knowing our Christ self. Left unexposed, the people-pleasing patterns lead to resentment, irritation and anger. The Bible says, “Let your yea be yea, and your nay be nay.” The way back to Heaven is to follow the Spirit’s intuition; a “yes” from your heart, is a true yes, and a “no” from your heart, is a true no.
At its core, people-pleasing is a way of expressing fear of intimacy. It is an emotional defense against being truly seen, authentic, and transparent. We all want to feel completely accepted and accepting, and this is the kind of intimacy that Christ would have us know. It is the gift of being ourselves, one hundred percent!
