The ego is a getting mechanism; it gives to get. True giving is of the Spirit. Relationships can be used by the Spirit to open us up to an experience of unconditional love.

Jamie is a fast-talking, smooth drug rep, with a desire to make lots of money and climb the corporate ladder. He meets Maggie; a young woman with worldly defenses just as thick as his, who has a degenerative disease. They are drawn together for an assignment of opening to deeper intimacy. Jamie has never been “in love” before and Maggie is using her illness as a defense to keep herself from opening up.

As they get closer to an authentic experience of love, doubt thoughts arise and both of them go through phases of pushing the other away out of fear and unworthiness. In the end, defenses are laid aside and there is no more “giving to get.”

We never really could get anything from anyone. We can only extend the love that we are, holding nothing back, no matter how it looks in form. We’re not in control of the script, and love is patient, love is kind.
