Bruce sees himself as a victim of the world. He believes he is unrecognized in his career, overshadowed by his colleague and unappreciated by his girlfriend. Feeling that he’s the victim of a cruel God, he blames God and rages at Him. Finally, in desperation, Bruce pleads to God for guidance and a miracle. God responds, but Bruce refuses to notice. So God appears to him and grants His power to Bruce. Bruce uses this power for selfish purposes, not taking the prayers of others seriously. He gets caught in the delusion that he has things under control but is finally brought to his knees when his world starts falling apart. Bruce comes to see that his efforts aimed at trying to get more for himself merely reinforce his belief in lack, that his life does not have a meaningful purpose.
Now his healing can begin. When we see that all our efforts to make ourselves happy have failed, we open to asking the One who knows. Bruce chooses again, this time to genuinely serve God and others. With this inner shift he is enlivened with Spirit and desires only to give and forgive. Bruce learns that God’s Will is our will, and that following His plan is the only road to happiness.
