What are attack thoughts? How can you release attack thoughts so that you can feel at peace? “In the Workbook of A Course in Miracles, Jesus says that you will be willing to let attack thoughts go as soon as you realize one thing: that being attacked and attacking are the same, because that will take you out of the whole belief in victimization or victimhood. Lesson 23 says, ‘I can escape from the world I see by giving up attack thoughts.’
It is really a convincing job by the Holy Spirit. Most people who work with the Course over many years find that the time that they want to hold on to attack thoughts gets shorter and shorter, because they are being convinced that they do not want attack thoughts. Anger only comes into awareness because it is still desired. But that sounds crazy. Who would desire to be angry, unless you believe that God was going to kill you, and by making yourself angry you are mitigating a punishment from God?
Sometimes children do this with their parents, 'Don’t hurt me, don’t hit me. I’ll give some kind of punishment to myself to avoid what seems to be a greater punishment.' So even though this may sound crazy, every time you choose to be angry, you are still afraid that there is some kind of punishment coming from God. Even if you are not consciously aware of it, this is the dynamic that is going on in the mind.”
