The belief that you could separate from Source and accomplish insanity is the “tiny mad idea” that Jesus talks about in A Course in Miracles. The mind, in reality, cannot accomplish this. The belief that you could separate from Source is a horrific idea. It’s mad. It’s insane! The belief that you are a separate consciousness takes a lot of active denying, pushing out, and repressing because it is so intolerable to your mind. Your natural state is unified, peaceful, and loving. The emotion associated with that “tiny mad idea” is fear. There isn’t really a way to reconcile love and fear. Light and darkness cannot coexist. The fear is so intolerable that it is pushed out of awareness. This creates the unconscious. On the surface of awareness you experience only diluted guilt; small doses that seem to be very spread out. This keeps the original error buried. The ego is playing a time-space trick in order to keep you distracted on the surface. You have smaller fears and pains, like back pain or a toothache, in order to keep you away from true healing. The surface was made to be tolerable, with pleasure and pain, so you think oh, that’s just the way it is. I have to take the good with the bad. The surface is made to cover over the unconscious; the dark shadow. It is necessary to expose private thoughts so that you can begin to see the unreality of the ego’s fearful thought system. The ego wants to exist, so it tries to keep darkness hidden. If you expose it, you cleanse it. Bring it up! Instead of repressing and denying, you can express. Allow yourself to let everything pour through, with no fear. It is a cleansing, purifying experience.
