Underneath the attempt to control someone else is guilt, protectionism, and fear of the past being repeated. Children are a reflection of mind, and if secrets are kept from them, they will reflect this and keep secrets.
 
Teach what you would learn in all relationships and the outcome will be real relationships based upon honesty, integrity and trust.
