This is a deep mind-watcher movie that graphically portrays ideas of justice and injustice. From the wealthy slave-trader, who murders his brother and chooses his own penance, to the “innocent indigenous Indians” at the mercy of the church, the Spaniards and the Portuguese; there are many opportunities to watch for the perception of injustice to arise. The Jesuit Priests also have to make a choice; to abide fully by the defenseless teachings of Jesus or to take a side. Unquestioned beliefs such as an “external enemy” will always lead to war and death. True freedom comes only from going within and letting go of deeply held beliefs involving unworthiness, protectionism, and the belief that this world can provide real safety.
