An overcrowded maximum-security prison, the end of the line in Alabama’s correctional system, is dramatically changed by the influence of an ancient meditation program. Behind high security towers and a double row of barbed wire and electrical fence dwells a host of convicts who will never see the light of day. But for some of these men, a spark is ignited when it becomes the first maximum-security prison in North America to hold an extended Vipassana retreat, an emotionally and physically demanding course of silent meditation lasting ten days.

This documentary tells a dramatic tale of human potential and transformation as it closely follows and documents the stories of the prison inmates at Donaldson Correctional Facility, who enter into this arduous and intensive program.

There are no conditions where the Spirit cannot help, even in a maximum security prison. What is the difference between long hours of meditating or using the Course to achieve enlightenment? "A Course in Miracles" is the means to save time in the awakening process; there is no need for long hours of meditation if we are asking Spirit to help us bring the darkness to the light for healing. There is no need for long periods of sacrifice or for “crazy wisdom” (i.e., doing things just for the stuff to come up). There is going to be nothing asked of you, you are not going to be put to the test to prove anything on this path. There is no need to put forth any demonstration in the world to prove your worthiness.

The essence of meditation is to allow whatever is there to arise and look at it in the light. How do I become aware that there is no future enlightenment? The “how” is to turn the mind around and look at the blocks from the state of enlightenment, where we already are in truth. The Spirit just asks for the willingness or trust first to see the world differently than we saw it before. It is just a tweak in perception.
