"Surrogates" shows the isolation and complacency of the human condition. The mind uses the body as its puppet and when it is being operated by the ego, the focus is on improvement in terms of looks and physical abilities. The ego’s use for the body is pride, pleasure, and attack. Minds join, bodies do not.
“Whom God has joined as one, the ego cannot put asunder.” (T-17.III.7)
The body is a block to true intimacy. In fact, it is a denial of Self. For as long as it is valued and used as a hiding place, the healing of the mind must wait. Beneath the surface exterior of what the world calls “beautiful” is a mind completely unaware of its true identity, distracting itself from facing a deep sense of loss, isolation, and lack.
A first step in healing is seeing the misuse of the body and the ego’s purpose for it. The next step is to dare to drop the mask and begin to open up in a more authentic way.
The development of high tech surrogates was intended to “improve” the life of people with physical disabilities. However, as the technology became more affordable to the general public, surrogate bodies quickly became a way of life for the human population who would rather wear a mask and preserve their own human body than use it for daily life and interaction.
