This is a timeless story of love and forgiveness. It begins with the main character, Jean Valjean, being released after serving nineteen years in prison. Although he is now a free man, his future looks bleak as his yellow passport ties him to the past. He has nothing, and it seems that no one will help.
A bishop takes him in, feeds and shelters him and gives him so much more. This act of forgiveness has a profound effect on Valjean. He devotes the rest of his life to extending this same generosity of Spirit to all whom he encounters.
As we turn in the direction of the Spirit, toward healing and forgiveness, there can be aspects of the mind that represent the old ways of guilt and grievance that will surface, awaiting our acceptance and release. Inspector Javert is such a symbol. He pursues Valjean for years, determined that he be captured and returned to prison.
Valjean continues to extend the same love and charity to Javert that he experienced years before from the bishop. Valjean has no hatred toward Javert. He sees as the Spirit would have us see. Javert is simply calling out desperately for love and each time he calls, his savior, in the form of Valjean, responds to him with love.
As Valjean says, we are all children of God, and in His eyes we are all innocent. In that we have nothing to say. We cannot be but what we are; innocent, wholly loving as we were created, now and eternally. Amen.
